It's a NEW DAY, Reader! You may have noticed I've been talking a lot about digestion lately. As a practitioner who sees people as WHOLE, not just organs, systems, and symptoms, I think about digestion quite differently than many other health professionals We have medical specialists who focus only on the digestive system - gastroenterologists - and some of them even get more specialized and focus on just one area of that system. When we need a surgeon, these are the people we want holding the scalpel! We also have lots of other doctors who would never even think there could be a connection between the gut and the issues they help their patients with, even going so far as to say, "It doesn't matter what you eat. Changing your diet won't have any impact on your XYZ." As maddening as that is, it's not surprising since most doctors don't get any nutrition training at all. Looking at the conventional medical models, it's easy to get the impression that the digestive system and what happens in it has nothing to do with any other part of our body or any other health concern beyond things like constipation, diarrhea, gas, and bloating. This thought couldn't be more wrong! Digestion and what we eat can make all the difference in the world! Digestion is way more than just the journey that food takes through our body. It's about way more than the unpleasant effects we may feel when we eat certain things, and our hope of relieving those symptoms. Digestion is THE ONLY WAY we get nutrients from our food. And everything in the body happens
When digestion is working well and we are eating nutrient-dense foods, we are able to pull most of the nutrients out of our food. Our bodies use these nutrients to repair injuries and general wear and tear that happens with daily life. With timely and thorough repair, we feel great and we function well. When we have poor digestion, what we are unable to break down can turn toxic and
When too many cells are damaged and there aren’t enough nutrients to repair them, we get inflammation. This can affect any part of the body from the skin to the brain, from the joints to the heart, from the stomach to the reproductive organs. The health of our entire body relies on digestion! Digestion is the stone that sets off ripples throughout our bodies, and these can be positive ripples of wellness or negative ripples of illness. The reason this is such great news is that we can shift from the negative ripple to the positive ripple by addressing digestion: focusing on supporting the digestive system and processes while being intentional about eating foods that contain lots of nutrients. While there are lots of good things we can do from the outside to support those individual parts of our bodies where we are experiencing symptoms, we can also experience profound improvements by addressing ONE thing - digestion. When your digestion and gut are supported and you have more nutrients available, your whole body will be positively affected! Skin: clearer and more radiant Immune system: better able to handle allergens and viruses that cause illness Energy: consistent - get through the day without an energy crash or needing a nap Hormones: balanced, fewer ‘roller coaster’ effects Digestion: less bloating, gas, and pain; more regular and complete poops (admit it, that sounds pretty good, right?) Brain: clearer thinking, better ability to focus, fewer headaches Mental health: fewer anxious thoughts, better and more even moods Which of these seem like distant dreams for you today? It's a NEW DAY, Reader! You are what you eat. We've all heard that phrase... but is it true? In some ways, yes, because our bodies get their building blocks from the food we eat. Amino acids from protein, fatty acids from fats, vitamins, and minerals are all part of our physical structure. Bones, muscles, brain, heart, blood, all of it - made of and made by nutrients. Even our nerve impulses are mineral-dependent! But in other ways, it is not true. For one, there are some things in our bodies...
It's a NEW DAY, Reader! Imagine these scenarios with me for a moment... You want to plant some flowers and you need to know more about what kinds will grow well in your yard... but you don't want to bother the workers at the garden center, so you just continue to cultivate dandelions the rest of your life. You want to buy a house and you need a loan... but you don't want to bother the loan officer at the bank, so you just continue renting that dumpy apartment for the rest of your life. You...
It's a NEW DAY, Reader! A dear friend and fellow subscriber wrote me an email a couple weeks ago and mentioned that her little ones (ages 1 and 5) were under the weather. She had gone to the store and bought them all the regular foods and beverages you give sick kids. Then she realized that most of that stuff was actually junk food, full of sugar and void of any real nutrition 😨 Smart mama! She then asked me what kinds of foods I would recommend for sick kids... which I thought was a perfect...
